Proposal Walk of the Port: Lanterna – Porto Antico
The harbor promenade was conceived at the ‘preliminary design’ stage as a compensatory measure for the construction of the Cold Ironing building and other port works, in compliance with the requirements of the Archaeological Superintendency B.A.P. for the Metropolitan City of Genoa, which, in the approval of March 2024 in CdS, authorized the project, requiring that “the proposed elevated connection highlighted in the landscape report be developed.”
The roof of the Cold Ironing building was designed to accommodate the path, becoming a connecting “bridge” where the public promenade is delicately and harmoniously inserted into the coastal landscape, designed with port-style forms and materials, in continuity with the existing Passeggiata della Lanterna, designed by AMA in 2001.
The path was further developed as a “proposal” at the feasibility study level to integrate the port and urban infrastructure hubs of the Ferry Terminal, Cold Ironing, Maritime Station-Cruise Terminal, Principe Railway Station, Darsena, and Porto Antico, with land-sea connections to simultaneously redevelop the Principe and Di Negro neighborhoods.
The “proposed” path will allow port operators flexible and dynamic connections, with the possible creation of parking for cruise passengers. It will allow residents and tourists to move along the port arch in a prominent position facing the sea, bridging the existing gap and maintaining unaltered land-sea views in a highly congested area that requires redevelopment through shared planning that respects the landscape.
The harbor promenade is designed as a light elevated waterfront pedestrian path connecting the Lanterna cultural center and the Porto Antico.
